Fender Made in Japan J Precision Bass Black Gold

The LUNA SEA J Model from Fender Japan is finally here!

LUNA SEA is a rock band that enjoys immense popularity not only in Japan but throughout Asia.

J, the band’s bassist, has been a longtime fan of various Precision Bass models.

Among them, the “Black Gold”—crafted by Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Greg Fessler—has earned his absolute trust on stage and in the recording studio ever since he acquired it. In 2020, a limited edition of just 25 units, built to J’s exact specifications, was released to great fanfare.

Now, we are releasing the “Made in Japan J Precision Bass Black Gold” as a signature bass, a model that carries on those specifications with Japanese craftsmanship.

It features not only the reverse headstock—which embodies J’s musical philosophy—but also recreates the original “Black Gold” color, inspired by a vintage 1970s motorcycle helmet, a nod to J’s love of motorcycles.

This color, which appears different depending on the angle, creates a variety of impressions under stage lighting.

The one-piece maple neck, profiled by the Custom Shop, features a 7.25-inch radius and Narrow Tall frets. While retaining the grip feel of the ’50s, the nut width has been kept to 42 mm—a meticulous specification designed to ensure smooth playability even during long sets.

Sonically, the combination of the ash body and the J Custom P Bass pickup—newly developed specifically for this model—delivers a rich midrange that remains clear even when driven hard.

A signature J model that makes no compromises in looks, playability, or sound.

As a testament to this, the neck plate is engraved with J’s trademark image of the Virgin Mary.
