Antique J. Sklar Brinkerhoff Type Rectal Speculum - Patented 1900 & 1901 - Medical Collectible
Up for sale is a fascinating piece of antique medical history: an early-20th-century bivalve rectal speculum manufactured by the renowned J. Sklar Manufacturing Company. This unique instrument features a scissor-style handle configuration and a split conical viewing chamber, representative of surgical tech from the turn of the century.
Item Markings & Details:
- Manufacturer: J. Sklar Mfg. Co. (Features the classic "Sklar" shield/P logo stamped inside the handle channel).
- Patent Dates: Clearly stamped on the inner handle surfaces with "PAT. JAN. 9 - 1900" on one side and "BLANK PAT. 4 - 9 - 01" on the opposite side.
- Design: Brinkerhoff style scissor-action bivalve speculum with a slotted expander.
Condition Notes:
- Mechanics: The central pivot rivet is tight and strong. The scissor-style handles squeeze and expand the viewing blades smoothly without sticking.
- Cosmetics: Excellent antique condition. The bright nickel/chrome plating remains highly reflective with a beautiful mirror shine across the exterior surfaces. The inner channels show minor discoloration and faint surface oxidation/rust coloration concentrated entirely around the raw metal hinge pin assembly—common for an authentic medical piece of this vintage.
- Structural Integrity: No cracks, bends, repairs, or heavy metal pitting.
