Optical Design for Medium Format Macro
The SMC Pentax-A 645 120mm F4 Macro is a dedicated close-up lens for the Pentax 645 medium format system, built with a 9-element, 7-group optical design optimized for close focusing rather than only at infinity, a design priority distinct from standard medium format primes in the same lineup.

SMC Multi-Layer Coating
Pentax applied its Super Multi Coating (SMC) process to this lens, a multi-layer coating technology developed by Asahi Optical to reduce flare and ghosting while improving light transmission and color rendition, carried over from Pentax's 35mm Takumar and K-mount lines into the 645 system.

A-Series Aperture Coupling
As part of the SMC Pentax-A line, this lens has an "A" position on its aperture ring. Set to "A", it transmits aperture information to compatible Pentax 645 camera bodies, enabling programmed and shutter-priority automatic exposure in addition to aperture-priority and manual operation.

1:1 Life-Size Macro
The lens reaches a 1:1 (life-size) reproduction ratio without extension tubes, focusing as close as 0.39 meters and continuing through to infinity, suiting product, nature, and detail photography where the larger medium format negative benefits fine texture and tonal rendition.

Pentax 645 Mount Compatibility
The lens uses the Pentax 645 bayonet mount, fitting the original Pentax 645, 645N and 645NII bodies, as well as the later 645D and 645Z digital bodies.
