ABOUT JAPANESE JINGASA

Jingasa (陣笠) are traditional Japanese headgear historically associated with samurai, foot soldiers, retainers, and other members of warrior society.

Unlike the more heavily constructed kabuto helmets, Jingasa were relatively lightweight and practical. They were made in a variety of shapes and materials and were sometimes decorated with lacquer, family crests, or decorative motifs.

This example is particularly distinctive because of its large approximately 39 cm diameter and its black lacquered surface decorated with a flowing water and cherry blossom maki-e design.

The combination of traditional Japanese lacquer decoration and a warrior-related form makes this an interesting piece for collectors of Japanese antiques and samurai-related objects.

The item also has an interesting recent provenance: according to the previous owner, it was purchased at an antique market near Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park, Tokyo approximately 32 years ago.
