Original antique map

The Road from LONDON to BATH and WELLS

by Thomas Gardner

Published London 1719 by J.Tonson & J.Watts, in Thomas Gardner's

"A Pocket-Guide to the English Traveller: Being a Complete Survey and measurement of all the Principle Roads and Most Considerable Cross-Roads in England and Wales"

Based on the earlier survey by John Ogilby, the road atlas was never re-published so the maps have become quite scarce.

This is plate 35 with a dedication to Joseph Erle Esq.

Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring.

An interesting highly detailed original early 18th century antique road strip map, showing the route from Chippenham to Wells via Pickwick, Poulton and Bath, and also from Marlborough to Wells via Devizes, Trowbridge, Norton St.Philip (Philip's Norton) and Chilcompton.

The map depicts the route in the form of 7 vertical strips with a compass rose to each section showing orientation. Topographical features, villages, hamlets and even individual buildings are depicted and named together with distances in miles between places.

Fine condition other than insignificant age related blemishes (see images), printed on hand laid paper, blank verso, free of repairs or restoration, not folded.

Approx. 12" x 8" (300mm x 200mm) overall.

As an added bonus the back of the map contains a fascinating set of recipes for medicines to treat asthma, consumption and worms, written in an early hand with a later annotation dated 1812.
