Up for sale is a classic piece of domestic history: an Antique Charcoal / Slug Box Sad Iron. Unlike solid cast-iron "sad irons" that had to be constantly reheated directly on a hot stove, this advanced box iron design features a hollow core chamber. A pre-heated solid metal block (called a "slug") or glowing hot charcoal embers would be placed right inside the box body to keep the pressing plate hot for extended periods. It features a beautiful turned dark wood handle with a classic antique spring-release latched gate latch mechanism at the heel, allowing you to lift or securely lock down the top lid.
