Handmade Hawaiian ʻopihi shell necklace by artist Louie “The Fish” DeNolfo.

This beautiful, one-of-a-kind necklace was personally handmade by Louie DeNolfo, a longtime Hawaii artist and bone carver known for his work with natural materials, including bone and shell.

I acquired this piece personally through the artist’s family, so I know its maker and provenance firsthand.

The necklace features three large natural Hawaiian ʻopihi (limpet) shells. Each shell was painstakingly worked, sanded and polished by hand to reveal the beautiful natural cream, golden-brown and pearlescent coloring beneath the shell’s exterior. A significant amount of time and handwork went into creating the piece.

The three shells are secured on a hand-braided natural cord and finished with a handmade bone toggle clasp, giving the entire necklace a beautiful organic, traditional island aesthetic.
