An extraordinary masterwork of turn-of-the-century English ceramic art, this antique display cabinet plate represents the pinnacle of luxury production from the historic Coalport Porcelain Works in Shropshire, England. Rendered on the famous and highly desirable "Catherine" shape molded blank, this piece features an elegant crimped, gadrooned scalloped rim blanketed in heavy gold.
The centerpiece of this exhibition-quality plate is a breathtaking, completely hand-painted topographical landscape of Scotland's historic "Loch Katrine," proudly hand-signed by the legendary Coalport factory master painter, E.O. Ball (Edward O. Ball). Renowned for his exquisite handling of light and atmospheric depth, Ball beautifully renders a lone boater drifting on the mirror-like waters of the loch, flanked by detailed birch trees and the soft, misty peaks of the Trossachs mountains rising in the distance.
The central miniature masterpiece is framed by an ornate, deeply sculpted border of hand-applied raised gold paste rococo scrolls. The expansive outer rim features a flawlessly saturated deep cobalt blue enamel ground, which serves as a dramatic canvas for an array of elaborate raised gilding. The gilded motifs include classical stylized urns/lyres, trailing floral festoons, and delicate botanical sprigs that shimmer beautifully when angled under light.
This collector-grade piece is in pristine, investment-quality antique condition. The delicate bone china body is entirely free from chips, cracks, hairline splits, or repairs. The hand-painted central landscape by E.O. Ball is untouched, vibrant, and crisp. Remarkably, the extensive and fragile raised gold scrollwork and cobalt face gilding remain fully intact, displaying excellent bright mirror luster with no visible rubbing or age-appropriate gold loss. Absolutely magnificent on display.
