Philip Verheyen est un chirurgien flamand, (1648-1710). Il entreprend des études artistiques et dévoile de véritables talents de dessinateur. C'est alors qu'il est initié au dessin d'anatomie en copiant les xylographies du XVe siècle d'André Vésale et les plâtres d'antiquités grecques et romaines. C'est aussi à cette époque qu'il apprend la technique de la gravure, mise en pratique dans son fameux livre Corporis Humani Anatomia. Le Corporis cumule 21 éditions, que Verheyen révise lui-même. Pendant la première décennie du XVIIIe siècle, ce livre sert de manuel scolaire dans presque toutes les universités européennes et remplace le recueil d'anatomie de Caspar Bartholin le Vieux.

Philip Verheyen was a Flemish surgeon (1648-1710), who undertook artistic studies and revealed his true talents as a draftsman. It was then that he was introduced to anatomy drawing by copying the xylographs of the fifteenth century André Vésale and the plasters of Greek and Roman antiquities. It was also at this time that he learned the technique of engraving, put into practice in his famous book Corporis Humani Anatomia. Le Corporis has had 21 editions, which Verheyen himself revised. During the first decade of the 18th century, this book served as a textbook in almost all European universities and replaced the anatomy collection of Caspar Bartholin the Old.
