Offered is a beautiful and substantial red lacquer box inherited from Captain Robert Marshall, purchased by him in Japan after WWII during the US occupation period.

This is a classic Chinese export piece sold in Japanese port shops in Yokohama / Kobe to American officers 1945-1952.

Details:

This box measures a large 15 inches long x 8.3 inches wide x 6.2 inches tall. The hinged lid features a deeply carved high-relief scene of three warriors on horseback with spears, accompanied by a foot soldier. The carving depicts a scene from the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), a very popular export motif. The figures show fine detail in the armor, saddles, and horse manes, with original gilt gold dusting and black enamel on hooves and boots.

The box is constructed of solid wood with thick red lacquer. It is not solid cinnabar lacquer built up from hundreds of layers, but the traditional export method of carved wood lacquered red, which is correct for this period. Brass hardware with engraved floral hasp and functioning original pin lock with key.

Interior is wood with age patina, perfect for documents, jewelry, keepsakes, or display.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Some rubbing to gold, light lacquer wear and minor chips to rim consistent with age and use, see photos. Hinge tight, lock works, includes original key. No major losses to carving. Clean, solid, and display-ready. Please review all photos closely - they are part of the description.
