Germany Privatpostmarken 1887 BERGEDORF Private Local Post Animals 2pf VG Used. Small thin. Look Fine.
Scarce early Local issue.

Attractive Privatpost stamp from the short‑lived Bergedorfer Brief‑Beförderungs‑Gesellschaft, which operated only from December 21, 1887 to January 28, 1888. Because the service existed for just 38 days, genuine used examples are desirable and historically significant.
This 2 Pfennig value features the charming “Otter” motif, one of the best‑known designs from the Bergedorf local‑post issues. The stamp shows a clear partial BERG cancellation, confirming genuine postal use. The design remains sharp, with good color and intact perforations..

Between the 1880s and early 1900s, Germany saw a flourishing of Privatpost companies — independent postal carriers authorized to handle local mail, express packets, and printed matter. They produced their own stamps, often beautifully designed and regionally distinctive. These private posts filled gaps in urban delivery networks and offered competitive alternatives to the national postal system. Their stamps are now collected for their historical value, artistic appeal, and the diversity of cities and companies involved. Most were eventually absorbed or closed as postal regulations tightened in the early 20th century.

Early Privatpost issues are increasingly collected for their regional identity, ornate design, and the short operational lifespan of many local posts. They offer excellent value and are perfect additions to Local collections or German private mail carriers.
