A charming antique Buddha with great characteristics and of very attractive style still..
This piece is an antique wooden Thai Buddha statue, most likely dating back to the mid 19th century.
The antique sculpture exhibits classic Thai / Rattanakosin style traits. It shares many characteristics with figures found across Thailand and neighboring Laos.
It features the elongated ushnisha (the cranial bump representing spiritual wisdom) and a stylized frontal cloth (thip) cascading over a multi-tiered pedestal base.
The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra (the "Earth Witness" gesture), where the left hand rests in the lap palm up, and the right hand reaches down over the knee toward the ground.
It is hand-carved from wood and retains still authentic traces of its original lacquer and gold leaf (gilding).
The visible darkening and wear are natural signs of age where the gold has rubbed away over time to reveal the base wood and underlying adhesive lacquer.
At approximately 13 cm high, this is a beautiful example of a smaller, personal shrine or house altar Buddha from Southeast Asia.
Of great charm and antique artistry. Despite expected antique wear it remains both an object of devotion and beautiful object d'art.
