Antique 19th-century Ottoman Turkish embroidered bohça / wrapping cloth, measuring approximately 42 inches x 42 inches.

This large square textile is worked on a fine, lightweight plain-weave linen ground with an elaborate repeating floral and fruit design surrounded by multiple embroidered borders. The embroidery is executed in several techniques, including fine linear and filled stitching throughout the scrolling foliage, together with larger raised lustrous fruit and flower motifs. The raised embroidery appears to be silk or silk-like thread; some elements incorporate wrapped or metallic thread.

The overall format, size and decoration are consistent with an Ottoman bohça, a decorative square wrapping cloth traditionally used for garments, gifts, household textiles and other belongings.

Textile measures approximately 42 inches square. Good antique condition with age-related wear. There are scattered small holes and losses, staining/discoloration, areas of loose or missing embroidery, pulled threads and general surface wear consistent with age and use. The textile remains substantially intact and the complete overall composition is clearly visible. The reverse has been photographed extensively to show the embroidery construction and condition.
