Pair of attractive 1896 Augsburg Private Local Post (“Privat‑Stadtbrief‑Verkehr”) – 2 Pfennig stamps, one in blue and one in red, each showing the ornate Hérion coat of arms. Both stamps are used, bearing private‑post cancellations typical of Augsburg’s late‑19th‑century local mail service.

Between the 1880s and early 1900s, Germany saw a flourishing of Privatpost companies — independent postal carriers authorized to handle local mail, express packets, and printed matter. They produced their own stamps, often beautifully designed and regionally distinctive. These private posts filled gaps in urban delivery networks and offered competitive alternatives to the national postal system. Their stamps are now collected for their historical value, artistic appeal, and the diversity of cities and companies involved. Most were eventually absorbed or closed as postal regulations tightened in the early 20th century.
