Antique condition with age-appropriate surface wear, scratches, oxidation and dark natural patina. Evidence of what appears to be worn gold wash/gilding remains in portions of the bowl and handle decoration. Period engraved monogram on reverse. No major bends or breaks observed. The spoon has intentionally not been aggressively polished, preserving its antique surface and decorative detail. Please review all photographs closely as they are an important part of the condition description.
Beautiful antique Norwegian 830 silver teaspoon by Christiansen & Svendsen (C&S) of Trondheim, Norway.
The spoon is clearly struck “C&S 830S,” indicating manufacture in 830/1000 solid silver rather than silver plate.
Christiansen & Svendsen were active Norwegian silversmiths during the early decades of the 20th century. Based on the maker, construction and decorative style, this example likely dates to approximately the early 1900s–1920s.
The handle features an especially attractive Neoclassical / Louis XVI Revival-inspired design, including:
The reverse bears a beautifully flowing period hand-engraved monogram, adding character and provenance to the piece.
The spoon retains substantial dark oxidation and patina, particularly inside the bowl and recessed portions of the decoration. Areas of warm gold coloration appear to represent remnants of an earlier gold-washed or gilded finish, although this has not been independently tested and is therefore being described conservatively.
