This stunning 19th-century solid silver sugar box is a true masterpiece of Polish silversmithing, handcrafted in Warsaw around 1840. Its creator, Karol Filip Malcz, was the most celebrated court jeweler of his era, famous for introducing the elegant Biedermeier style to Eastern Europe's elite. Founded in 1827, the Malcz workshop became a symbol of prestige, known for its flawless execution, heavy gauge silver, and superb artistic detail. This box is fully and clearly hallmarked with Malcz’s signature script, the Warsaw city mark, and the genuine 12 lot purity stamp.
Designed during a time when sugar was a luxury stored under lock and key, this octagonal box features gorgeous relief friezes and stands proudly on four acanthus-leaf scroll feet. The front boasts an impressive, detailed lock plate featuring an eagle perched over a floral wreath. The piece measures 12 x 9.5 cm (approximately 4.7 x 3.7 inches) with a height of 9.5 cm (3.7 inches), and with a substantial weight of 535 grams (±5 grams), it feels incredibly solid and important in hand.
The condition is exceptional for a piece nearly 180 years old. The long tube hinge is original and solid, allowing the lid to close tightly and flush. Inside, you can still admire distinct traces of the original warm gold gilding. The key is missing, and the internal iron mechanism has naturally seized over time, but it remains secured by its original screws without any modern alterations. This is an investment-grade piece of historic Polish silver, an authentic Biedermeier cukiernica Warszawa that will anchor any fine European antique collection.
