What is "Ngang"?
(Based on Arjarn Kom's perspective and historical context)
- It Is NOT A Buddha Image: Even though people commonly misunderstand and refer to it as "Phra Chai Ayutthaya," the key characteristic of Ngang is its "nakedness." It bears no traces of monk robes (Jivara or Sanghati). This is entirely different from Buddha images, which always feature robes, regardless of how small the statue is.
- A Representation Of The Prophet "Mahavira": Arjarn Kom stated that Ngang is actually a revered image of "Mahavira," the 24th Tirthankara (prophet) of Jainism—specifically of the Digambara sect (the "sky-clad" or naked ascetics, referred to in ancient terms as "Naga Putta"). Jainism shares very similar teachings and strict disciplines with Buddhism.
- A Tool Of Religious Suppression During The Ayutthaya Era: In ancient times, religions often created symbols to assert dominance over one another. Ngang amulets were created during the Ayutthaya period with the specific intent to "mock and devalue" Jainism, likely out of fear that the religion might spread and outshine Buddhism. The statues were intentionally molded to look awkward or goofy (which is the origin of the Thai insult "Ai Ngang," meaning "idiot"). Furthermore, they were buried in low, degrading places—such as under the walkways in front of a temple's boundary stones (Sema) so that people would unknowingly trample on them before entering the ordination hall.
- Naturally Occurring Sacred Power: Although they were originally created to be stepped on, being buried underground for centuries allowed these objects to absorb natural, mystical energy over time. When ancient people discovered them and wore them around their waists, they experienced real, tangible magic. Ngang is ultimately renowned for two extreme powers: Ultimate Charm (romantic attraction and philandering) and Kong Krapan Chatri (invulnerability, to the point where even dog bites cannot pierce the skin).
