Whiteia woodwardi – Fossil Coelacanth

Rare and scientifically interesting specimen of Whiteia woodwardi, an Early Triassic coelacanth from the Middle Sakamena Formation of Madagascar.

Whiteia belongs to the coelacanths, an ancient lineage of lobe-finned fishes with an evolutionary history extending for hundreds of millions of years. Fossil representatives of this group are particularly important for understanding the early diversification and evolution of sarcopterygian fishes.

This specimen dates to the Dienerian stage of the Early Triassic, shortly after the end-Permian mass extinction. Fossils from this interval provide an important record of the recovery and restructuring of aquatic ecosystems following the largest known mass extinction in Earth's history.

The specimen originates from Bed 5 of the Middle Sakamena Formation near Bororoha, Madagascar, a locality known for its important Early Triassic vertebrate assemblages.

The fossil is preserved on its original natural matrix with identifiable anatomical structures and good overall definition.

The specimen is original and unrestored. No reconstruction or restoration has been carried out, preserving the fossil in its authentic condition.

A desirable Early Triassic fossil fish combining an important evolutionary lineage, an interesting geological age, and a classic Madagascar provenance.

Ideal for collectors of fossil fishes, coelacanths, early vertebrates, Triassic fossils, and specimens documenting the recovery of life following the end-Permian extinction.

The specimen will be securely packed using professional protective materials to ensure safe worldwide shipping.

Guaranteed authentic and legally sourced. Documentation available upon request.
