Beautiful antique Diné (Navajo) handwoven wool rug, approximately 28 1/2 inches x 49 inches attributed to the Klagetoh/Ganado regional weaving tradition, probably dating to approximately 1900 - 1920.

Woven in a striking palette of natural taupe, dark brown and ivory wool with vivid red accents. The long symmetrical composition features large diamond medallions containing bold eight-pointed star-like forms, stepped crosses, and an elaborate field of hooked geometric motifs. The predominantly gray ground with red used as an accent is particularly associated with Klagetoh-area weaving.

The wool has wonderful variation in tone and texture and the rug retains a beautifully aged surface. Its format has tremendous decorative presence and would make it especially compelling displayed as a wall textile.

Rug has substantial age-related wear and damage. There are multiple holes and areas of wool loss, fraying and losses along the ends and edges, exposed warp threads, loose/open areas of weaving, possible old repairs or stabilization, general surface wear and soiling, and visible migration/bleeding of the red dye into surrounding lighter areas. It has not been cleaned. Please examine all photographs carefully.
