The Stone

This sapphire weighs 1.77 carats and carries a 7.40 × 7.32 mm face. Those two figures do not usually go together. The pavilion is cut shallow — 3.49 mm from table to culet — so the weight has been spent across the surface of the stone rather than buried underneath it, where nobody sees it. The result is a face wider than plenty of sapphires half a carat heavier.

Shallow cutting costs colour on a lesser stone; light passes through instead of coming back. That is what the five-step pavilion is for. The steps hold the body colour beneath a brilliant crown, so the blue stays even across the face instead of thinning out toward the centre, and the stone keeps its saturation in shade.

The outline is square within eight hundredths of a millimetre, which means it sits true in a bezel or a four-claw setting. GFCO graded the colour Cornflower Blue, with Sri Lankan origin stated on the report.

A 7.40 mm face at 1.77 carats — the spread of a heavier stone, without the weight of one.

Treatment & Clarity

Full Disclosure

The GFCO report records standard heat. Heating is the long-accepted, permanent and stable treatment applied to the large majority of blue sapphire on the market, and it is disclosed here in full. No other treatment is noted on the report.

GFCO does not assign a clarity grade to coloured stones. Under 80× magnification the laboratory recorded natural inclusions consistent with heated stones — the standard signature of the material and part of what identifies it as natural corundum rather than synthetic.

This stone is clean to the eye. Turn it under a lamp or hold it at reading distance and there is nothing that catches — the face reads as blue and nothing else. Magnification will find the inclusions that every natural sapphire carries; not one of them shows at the distance the stone is worn.

Every photograph and the video show the actual stone you will receive, shot in natural light without colour correction. Blue sapphire is notoriously difficult to photograph faithfully; the report reading of Cornflower Blue is the reliable reference for colour.
