The Stone

Weight is the easy part of a sapphire; spread is what a buyer actually sees. This cushion measures 7.49 × 6.54 mm face-up — a genuine centre stone, wide enough to carry a solitaire on its own rather than needing side stones to make up the size.

The crystal is the reason to look twice. Clean, open material transmits light instead of scattering it, and this one reads bright straight through the table, with the colour sitting evenly across the face rather than pooling toward the culet. GFCO graded it Cornflower Blue, Sri Lankan origin stated on the report.

Cutting is a mixed style: a brilliant crown over a five-step pavilion. The crown facets throw light back at the eye while the steps beneath hold the body colour, so the stone keeps its saturation in shade and sharpens under a lamp.

Ceylon has been the reference for blue sapphire for two thousand years. This is what the reference looks like at nearly two carats.

Treatment & Clarity

Full Disclosure

The GFCO report records standard heat. Heating is the long-accepted, permanent and stable treatment applied to the large majority of blue sapphire on the market, and it is disclosed here in full. No other treatment is noted on the report.

GFCO does not assign a clarity grade to coloured stones. Under 80× magnification the laboratory recorded natural inclusions consistent with heated stones — the standard signature of the material and part of what identifies it as natural corundum rather than synthetic.

To the eye, though, this is an exceptionally clean stone. At normal viewing distance nothing reads as an inclusion and the table stays open and bright. Inclusions are present under magnification, as they are in every natural sapphire; here they simply are not doing anything you can see.

Every photograph and the video show the actual stone you will receive, shot in natural light without colour correction. Blue sapphire is notoriously difficult to photograph faithfully; the report reading of Cornflower Blue is the reliable reference for colour.
