This pair of vintage Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints historic Nauvoo Temple* architectural detail Sunstone replica bookends are signed and dated by the artist Marvin Crozier – they are hallmarked “M. Crozier, 1978”. They are long discontinued having been made of a castable limestone and clay mix to resemble the mined limestone used in creating the 30 Sunstones that were on the Nauvoo Temple. Production of these bookends stopped when the materials became completely unavailable, and not long after that, the Nauvoo Pottery and Gallery closed their doors. Each measures about 7” tall x 6.25” wide x 2” deep x 5 pounds the pair as they sit. Both are in EXCELLENT, even EXCEPTIONAL condition: NO dents, dings, chips, cracks, stains, repairs, odors or grime. *The Nauvoo Temple was completed in 1845 and destroyed by an arsonist in 1848 with only 3 of the original 30 Sunstones surviving. In 1865 George W. Gray, president of the Methodist English and German College in Quincy, Illinois, rescued two largely intact Sunstones from the site and transported them via steamboat down the Mississippi River to Quincy, Illinois. One is now located at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. having been purchased in 1989 from for 100k, which, at that time, was the most expensive acquisition made by the museum. Another is on display at the Nauvoo Temple visitors Center. The third original Sunstone, and most heavily damaged, is now part of the LDS church historic archive.”
