History: Washington Mutual Savings Bank, commonly known as WaMu, was a Seattle-based financial institution and the largest savings and loan association in U.S. history. On September 25, 2008 it was seized by the Office of Thrift Supervision in the largest bank failure in U.S. history. While depositors were completely safe, the financial collapse completely wiped out WaMu's investors, shareholders and equity holders as they saw their stock value crash to zero and lost their entire investment, suffering massive losses.
