An antique pair of Victorian Staffordshire recumbent Ayrshire dairy cow figures in hand-painted earthenware.
These nineteenth-century opposing mantel figures retain their original russet decoration, blue neck straps and traditional pastoral styling. One faces left and one right, forming an original display pair with authentic Victorian character.

Produced in the Staffordshire Potteries during the Victorian period, these small recumbent Ayrshire cattle were made as decorative mantel ornaments between approximately 1860 and 1890. They display the characteristic opposing poses, hand-painted decoration, unglazed bases and small firing vents associated with nineteenth-century Staffordshire production. The firing crack to the left-hand example is an original kiln characteristic created during manufacture, while the horn loss to the companion figure reflects its long history of display and use. Both remain attractive original nineteenth-century examples with good colour and clear moulded detail. Displays well.
