Moretti Canted Dublin (2014)/ 360 Flame Grain/ Handmade, Italy/ MINT

Moretti uses only Calabrian heather from Italy, which is considered by most pipe smoking officiants to be the very finest smoking and he has a very rich stock, air-dried for 10-15 years. Marco’s requirements for heather are very strict. He will directly discard the defective wood. Therefore, the pipes he makes are mainly smooth pipes, and only less than 5% are etched pipes. The pipe crafting process from selecting heather to end dyeing and polishing, is done by Marco himself. This process reduces Moretti's production capacity and only about 1,000 are made annually.

Here’s a Moretti Canted Dublin shaped pipe in pristine, barely smoked condition. Crafted from well-seasoned vertical grained briar. Such graining will invariably assure very sweet and dry smoking enjoyment. Thick chamber walls will help keep this on cooler smoking. Draft hole is centered. Chamber interior is very sound and very clean, appearing unsmoked. Pipe has an effortless, wide-open draw. Tenon to mortise union is sound and snug. The Acrylic stem is crisp bearing no marks. Pipe does not accept a filter. Pipe weighs only a mere 1. 91 ounces (54.7 grams) No fills, no handling marks and pipe passes a cleaner with ease

Regarding graining, the well-respected authority on the subject, Carl Ehwa, in his landmark book, Pipes & Tobaccos, writes:

“When selecting briar pipes, quality of wood and workmanship and the type of graining are the prime considerations. Pipes made of dense, straight grain wood …  have a tendency to absorb moisture much more slowly, which means they will smoke more sweetly and need to be rested less often. The bird's–eye, or end grain at the bottom of the bowl of a straight grain pipe absorbs moisture more quickly than other grains. Yet, because of its position, it allows the moisture to drain away from the tobacco and the channel, thus keeping the smoke dry.” ~ Pg 128
