Type of artwork: An Original Antique Watercolour Painting

Surface: Paper / Card

Artist and signature: Signed indistinctly with monogram HSM

Follower of Henry Stacy Marks RA (1829–1898)

A charming and well-executed antique watercolour depicting a seated gentleman carefully examining a blue and white porcelain vase within an elaborate interior setting.

The subject matter is strongly reminiscent of the celebrated Victorian artist Henry Stacy Marks RA, who frequently painted collectors, connoisseurs and antiquarian interiors. The work bears a red monogram to the lower right which appears to read “HSM”, and the reverse carries an attribution label identifying the work as “Henry Stacy Marks RA (1829–1898) – Gentleman Examining a Vase”.

While no guarantee of authorship is offered, the picture is clearly by a competent hand and displays considerable skill in the depiction of porcelain, furniture and interior detail.
