PHILIP J. BRITTAN — AUTUMN RIVER

2013 First Edition | Limited Edition of 300 | Copy 046/300 | Twice Signed | Original Signed Print

An excellent example of Philip J. Brittan's 2013 first edition of Autumn River, published by PJB Editions.

This is the original limited edition of just 300 copies, issued with an accompanying signed colour photographic print.

The present copy is No. 046/300.

SIGNED COPY WITH ORIGINAL PRINT

This copy has particularly good provenance within the edition, with two separate signatures by Philip J. Brittan:

1. Signed on the publisher's page

Philip J. Brittan has signed the publisher/copyright page.

2. Original accompanying photographic print

The original colour photographic print is present and is:

Signed by Philip J. Brittan in the lower-left corner

Marked #21 in the lower-right corner

Loosely tipped in to the book, as issued

Retained with the book as part of the original limited-edition production

The 046/300 limitation is recorded separately on the book's limitation page.

This is therefore a twice-signed example of the 300-copy edition, complete with its original signed photographic print.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

Autumn River records Brittan's photographic work along the River Frome in South West England during autumn 2012.

The photographs were made by moving into the flowing water, either on foot or by boat, allowing the camera to look through and beneath the surface.

Leaves become reflected, distorted and transformed by the moving water, producing highly saturated combinations of red, orange and yellow, with the surrounding landscape appearing through the surface.

Julian Hoffman's essay, “Falling Away,” accompanies the photographs. Hoffman himself describes Brittan's work as photographing the autumn leaves from an unusual perspective, from either in or on the water of the River Frome.

Brittan's own current biography continues to describe Autumn River as a series concerned with the decaying leaves carried along the River Frome and the way light, water, movement and reflection transform them.

CONDITION

Very Good overall.

The original stiff card covers are present and retain their original appearance.

The original removable printed dust jacket is also present.

The book retains its original accompanying photographic print, loosely tipped in rather than permanently bound.

The print is signed by Philip J. Brittan and marked #21, while the book itself is signed on the publisher's page and numbered 046/300.

Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

EDITION & COLLECTOR'S NOTE

This is the original 2013 artist-book edition, limited to only 300 copies, rather than the substantially different 2020 edition.

The later 2020 publication is a 96-page hardcover with 44 images and ISBN 9780957631441, so it should not be confused with this original 2013 edition.

A specialist photography bookseller has previously offered a signed copy of this 2013 edition at £40, subsequently sold out.

This example has the added attraction of being signed on the publisher's page, numbered 046/300 and retaining the separately signed original photographic print, together with the original removable jacket.

A particularly nice complete example for collectors of contemporary photography and artist's books.
