MABIE TODD SWAN RING TOP FOUNTAIN PEN 

1/10 14K GOLD FILLED, WARRANTED 14K, 

NO MONOGRAM.

Ideal for gift or to win a great and pretty collectible. Its general condition is good. It is not restored. The pen body and cap are smooth; both are in good condition. It is marked in the base and the nib is marked as 14k Warranted. The pen is single-fill. You can see its components in the images. Received by inheritance. No original box.  

For sale is a beautiful antique Mabie Todd & Co. "Swan" ring-top fountain pen, dating back to the circa 1910s-1920s. This elegant pocket pen features a stunning 1/10 14K gold-filled fluted body with classic vertical lines design, manufactured in New York, USA. 

The pen is equipped with a period-correct, vintage "Warranted 14KT" solid gold nib (Made in U.S.A.), which guarantees the high quality of the writing gold alloy. The barrel is clearly stamped with "Swan Pen" and "Mabie Todd & Co. New York - Made in U.S.A." near the blind cap end. 

Condition: 

The gold-filled overlay is in very good cosmetic condition with bright luster and no significant brassing, deep dents, or personalization. The ring-top mechanism is intact. Please note that this item is being sold in an estate-found, untested condition and may require a cleaning or a light restoration to be fully functional. Perfect piece for pen collectors and vintage restorations.

MABIE TODD & CO NEW YORK: One of the pioneering and most respected companies in the history of fine writing instruments, renowned for its exceptional technical quality and its "Swan" line of pens.

MADE IN U.S.A.: This designation indicates that this specific model was manufactured in the U.S.A. plant before the company's production shifted primarily to its successful subsidiary in England.

1/10 14K GOLD FILLED: The body has a high-quality gold plating. This means that 10% of the total weight of the outer metal is solid 14-karat gold thermally fused onto a brass base—a much thicker and more durable method than common electroplating.

Historical Context and Dating

Based on its fluted cylindrical design, the engraving of the New York branch, and the ring-top hanging system, this model was manufactured between the 1910s and 1920s. It was a luxury pen designed to be easily carried in a waistcoat pocket or on a lanyard.

Details and Meaning of the Engraving on the Nib

WARRANTED: This inscription was a standard mark of quality in the antique writing industry. It legally certified that the nib contained the stated percentage of gold (58.3% pure gold for 14KT), guaranteeing that it was not simply plated or coated.

14KT: Indicates the purity of the material. 14-karat gold was the preferred alloy of the time because it offered the perfect balance between the flexibility needed for smooth writing and the structural rigidity to prevent the nib from deforming under pressure.

The Meaning of the "Swan" Line

Iconic Name: Mabie Todd introduced the Swan brand in the late 19th century to represent the smooth flow of ink, comparing it to the graceful glide of a swan across the water.

Prestige: In the 1910s and 1920s, owning a gold-plated Swan Pen was an unmistakable symbol of social and professional status due to its cutting-edge engineering.

Antique or vintage items are sold in their original condition, as found, except for a superficial dusting. Items may have stains or variations in paint tone or material condition, which are inherent to their age and are preserved to maintain their antique character. We do not perform polishing or restoration ourselves; we wish to maintain the originality. However, after purchase, if you wish to have these services done, it will be entirely at your discretion.

Shipments are made with appropriate and sufficient protection. Large, heavy, or fragile items are meticulously packed with professional materials, using bubble wrap, double-layered envelopes/cardboard, and a sturdy box to ensure safe transport.

Note: The measurements are approximate and should be considered with reasonable tolerance for the objects, even more so if they are small (+/- 5 to 10%).

IMPORTANT: I offer combined shipping. Many of my items have free shipping if send together, and for the rest, shipping will be 50% or less of the cost indicated for each item if shipped together (large items are send individually only).
