This Alden Long Wing Blucher is a fundamental Derby model of American shoemaking. Its roots go back to an era when the Shell Cordovan's existence hung by a thread. With the worldwide spread of the modern safety razor in the early twentieth century, demand for horsehide, previously required in large quantities for razor strops, dropped dramatically. To save this material from disappearing, the Alden Shoe Company formed a historic alliance with the Horween Leather Company of Chicago in 1930. Together they refined the previously rigid leather into a first-class material for upscale footwear. When this model was first released in 1958, it cemented the Alden Shoe Company's reputation as the undisputed authority in Shell Cordovan processing. To this day, this expertise, which has grown over decades, serves as a reference for other companies and defines the standard for dealing with this demanding material.
The shoe's construction is based on the legendary Barrie last. The Shell Cordovan in the shade Color 8 is tanned in a purely plant-based process lasting several months. In this special pair, the horse leather in color 8 shows an extremely rich, subtly aubergine undertone, which reveals fascinating color facets depending on the incidence of light. The shaft is connected to a double leather sole via a circumferential welt seam, the substance of which was designed for a long life. It is a deeply honest piece of craftsmanship that impresses less with its loud staging than with its calm consistency.
