Available for immediate purchase is a fantastic piece of 1930s Machine Age Americana: an original antique promotional desk thermometer featuring the iconic architectural "skyscraper" stepped-tier design. This functional piece of historic decor was distributed as a high-end promotional advertisement gift by local merchant R. A. Hoyt in Salem, New York.
Measures approx. 5" tall; 3" wide at base, 1" wide at top.
- The Design: Quintessential 1930s styling with strong vertical lines and geometric symmetry mimicking the era's famous skyscraper boom.
- Advertising Content: Features incredibly crisp, sharp black typography on a gold-tone metallic background reading: "R. A. HOYT / Meats and Groceries / TYDOL PRODUCTS / SALEM, N.Y. / PHONE 160". The reference to historic Tydol gas/oil products makes this highly desirable.
- Versatile Display: Features its original dual-purpose rear metal assembly. It can be hung on a wall using the top eyelet hole, or the metal kickstand can be folded out to display it as a freestanding desk, mantle, or counter piece.
- Condition Notes: Beautiful vintage condition with an authentic, gentle aged patina. The gold face finish remains incredibly vibrant. The glass thermometer tube is fully intact and functions properly, tracking room temperature accurately. The reverse side shows standard minor age-related wear to the metal and paperboard backing. No major dents, severe rust, or restoration. (Please review all high-resolution photos for exact cosmetic condition).
An outstanding display piece for collectors of vintage petroleum advertising, Art Deco office decor, or Washington County, New York history.
