BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE LEO-VICTOR GARDEY FRENCH BRONZE SPARROW BIRD SCULPTURE FIGURINE 3.2",
BELLE EPOQUE STYLE, SIGNED.

Good - Circa 1910.

Ideal gift for special occassions or collectors. this is a beautiful piece, a bronze sculpture. It is in good conditions, more than usual for the years passed (+115 years). The surface shows small scratches, porosity, and random impact marks. It also has a noticeable old patina with greenish deposits (verdigris), typical of the material's natural oxidation. it is a beautiful piece to decorate any furniture or desk. Received by inheritance. No original box.

Antique bronze sculpture depicting a fallen or wounded bird (commonly identified as a sparrow). This is a classic 19th-century French design originally intended as a decorative desk paperweight.

Visual characteristics: It shows the realistic figure of a bird with its back turned and its legs curled upwards. It exhibits a notable antique patina with greenish deposits (verdigris), typical of the natural oxidation of copper present in the bronze or brass alloy over the years.

Use: Due to its flat base and solid, heavy structure, these figures were used in Victorian and early 20th-century offices to hold documents on desks.

Base Analysis

Wear marks: The surface shows small scratches, porosity, and random impact marks. These are consistent with continuous rubbing on desks over time.

Manufacturing technique: The rough and irregular finish suggests a sand casting process.

The Author: Léo-Victor Gardey

Identity: He was a renowned French sculptor, designer, and goldsmith active during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. His work is distinguished by the excellent craftsmanship of his bronze pieces, utilitarian desk accessories (such as letter openers and inkwells), jewelry, and small animal sculptures (animalier).

Historical Record: His talent was significant enough in his time to warrant extensive coverage in French design publications of the period, such as the volumes of "The Paris Salons."

Density and Material: Weighing 210 grams for such small dimensions (8 cm × 3.5 cm × 2.5 cm), it is mathematically confirmed that this is a high-density solid bronze piece. This weight-to-size ratio is ideal for a functional paperweight, ensuring that it can hold stacks of documents securely.
