This listing is for an original pair of vintage silver gelatin photographs titled "Soldiers Farewell" by Arthur Fellig aka Weegee, dating back to 1940. The large black and white image measures approximately 9-11/16” x 13” and the smaller cropped version is approximately 5-3/8” x 7-3/8” both are unframed, showcasing the photojournalism style of the era. These press release photographs originating from Weegee’s very own darkroom that was located in his apartment at 5 Center Market Place New York City in the the United States, captures a moment in time and reflects the production technique of gelatin-silver prints commonly used during the 1925-1949 period. A unique and collectible piece for fine art photography enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
A copy of this exact photograph is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection of Fellig’s photographs. It has his stamp on the back of the large photo and although faint is still mostly visible and what is there is quite legible. This is what the stamp says:
“This Photo Sold for Use in One Publication Only, Credit Line Must Read, Arthur Fellig Photo, 5 Center Market Place, New York City”
This stamp was used between 1938-1941. Purple ink.
Condition is fair for photos this old, there are several small creases and one long one at the bottom right as well as a short tear at the top center. It also has the typical curling these types of photos are known for. The second smaller cropped version is in much better condition but has no stamp on the back. These photos will be shipped with adult signature required so someone will need to sign for them. That way they won’t just be dropped off on your porch to get eaten by the dog, stolen or what have you.
