Antique Antonio Loveri Copy of a Januarius Gaglianus Violin w/ Case Early 1900s
Here is a nice antique German Violin for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!
We acquired this Antonie Loveri Violin whom made violins in a region of Germany. The violins were then sold thru William Tonk & Brothers Co. of Chicago IL. This violin dates to the early 1900s.
A nice older violin here. This violin has two labels in it. First one is the maker violin for Antonio Loveri and then says "A Copy". Some sort of cursive writing in black ink on the first label, cannot make out what it says. Then, below that, the second label goes on to say Januarius Gaglianus and other wording. The Loveri name appears to be a trade name used by a Germany violin maker, not an actual party. This violin dates to the early 1900s period.
This fine violin is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a fine luthier shop or high end auction house. We have been selling fine items out of our home for over 35 years. We are therefore better positioned to control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the luthier shops and higher end auction houses pass on to their clients.
The pictures do not do justice to the beauty of this violin. The violin has a two piece belly and one piece back. Exceptional fine graining to the wood on the belly. Beautiful tiger maple striping on the back of the violin. Nice golden brown stain on the entire violin. Some finish loss, and scratching to the wood from use. No noticeable hairlines on the belly or back of the violin.
Nice inlaid purfling (all intact on both sides), f hole, and scroll work. The corner blocks are in place. The beaks have some wear and loss from age and being played. The soundboard and back are tightly glued to the sides. The right side down by the end peg is loose from the belly/back and will need some attention, all there. The front belly seam has some slight separation.
The sound post is up inside the violin body. No guarantee it will be after shipping. Nice one piece back on this fiddle and we see no cracks or repairs on it to report. The back's finish has a translucent look to it. Nice wood tailpiece that is impressed "England". Chin rest is a nice brown colored wood as well. No nut, bridge, or strings come with this violin offering.
4 nice matching brown tuning pegs with ebony beaded ends. Tuner box and scroll of the violin are still intact. Appears to have been some sort of patch on the back of tuner box at some time in the past.
The violin is 23-1/8" long, by 8-3/8" across at the lower bout, and 6.75" across at the upper bout. The violin body is 14" long.
This violin does comes with a violin case that is in fair shape on the inside and out. Nice red interior. A brownish colored exterior finish that has the look of leather. Two latches work, the 3rd is broken. No key for the lock on the case.
