A Victorian rose gold pendant medallion in the Aesthetic style, showing a beautifully engraved moth or butterfly. The edge is beaded and the bale is shaped like an acanthus leaf. The Naturalism movement began in the 1860s, with a scientific interest in the natural world and soon began to influence Art, including jewellery. To the reverse is a diamond shaped patent mark, which dates the piece to September 1869. In Victorian romantic language a butterfly or moth is associated with the soul or transformation, so a sentimental piece for a thoughtful lady. There is no hallmark so it may not be solid gold, probably gold back and front or gold filled. It measures just under 1 and a half inches long.
