Background
Shimada Hirosuke was the son of Yoshisuke and is regarded, together with Yoshisuke and Sukemune, as one of the three great swordsmiths of the Shimada school. He is especially respected for the quality of his workmanship. The second-generation Hirosuke, whose personal name was Murase Saemon-no-Jo, received the honorary title of Suruga-no-Kami and was active around the Tensho era (1573–1592). This wakizashi features a wide blade with a width of 3.2 cm and displays a striking hitatsura hamon that covers much of the blade. The steel and temper are bright and clear, creating a powerful and highly attractive example of the Shimada tradition. |
