Not long after British forces occupied Mesopotamia, now Iraq, after the defeat of Turkey at the end of the First World War, the local population began to demonstrate hostility towards the newcomers. By 1920 this had developed into a full-scale insurrection fostered by hostile actors (Turkey, Russia), local tribal/political rivalries, a reduction in numbers and quality of British forces, and insufficient political knowledge within the British Administration. The Author was sent by the British Government to deal with the situation. During the rebellion the British suffered a serious military defeat involving the 2nd Battalion The Manchester Regiment.  Handling wear, fading, scuffing and soiling to original red cloth boards.
