Malaya, a former member of the British Commenwealth located in the southern part of the Malay Peninsula.  It was occupied by Japan from 1941-1945.  Malaya was organized Feb 1 1948, was granted full independence on August 31 1957, and became part of the Federation of Malaysia on Sep 16 1963.
