Spain 1876 Alfonso XII 1 Peseta Blue Comunicaciones - Punch Cancel

Spain 1 Peseta blue, portrait of Alfonso XII, inscribed "Comunicaciones," 1876 issue. Cancelled by a large circular punch hole through the center of the stamp, approximately 4mm diameter, a cancellation method used by Spanish telegraph or government offices of the period. The punch is the primary cancellation and constitutes a significant fault - it is a clean hole through the paper, clearly visible from both sides. Perforations intact all around. No hinging, reverse otherwise clean with light toning. Color strong and design clear despite the punch.

Historical Note:

The 1876 Alfonso XII Comunicaciones series was issued following the Bourbon Restoration, which brought Alfonso XII to the Spanish throne after the tumultuous First Spanish Republic period. The 1 Peseta was a high-denomination value in the series. Punch-cancelled examples of Spanish classics are collected by specialists as a distinct cancellation type, though they trade at a significant discount to postally used or manuscript-cancelled examples.
