Background
Ishido Teruhide was the 10th-generation successor of the Ishido school, descending from Ishido Korekazu, a swordsmith who served the Tokugawa Shogunate. Trained under the 9th-generation Korekazu, he inherited the forging traditions of the Ishido lineage. During World War II, Teruhide forged exceptionally robust military swords intended for active service. After the war, he returned to manufacturing woodworking tools and never resumed swordsmithing before his death in 1982. As a result, swords by Teruhide are relatively scarce today. This sword is equipped with an auxiliary mekugi, securing the blade with two pegs rather than the standard single peg. This uncommon feature reflects a strong emphasis on durability, practicality, and safety for military use. Remarkably, more than 80 years after the war, the sword remains preserved in its original Type 98 Shin-Gunto mounting. Such a well-preserved example is rarely encountered and significantly enhances both its historical importance and collector appeal. |
