Xiao Chai Hu Tang, the “Minor Bupleurum Decoction,” is one of the most celebrated and widely studied formulas in the entire tradition of Traditional Chinese Medicine. First recorded by the Han-dynasty physician Zhang Zhongjing in the Shang Han Lun (Discussion of Cold Damage, c. 200 CE), it serves as the cornerstone formula for Shao Yang-stage disorders — the half-interior, half-exterior stage where a pathogen has entered beyond the body’s surface but not yet fully penetrated the interior. In Japan this formula is known as Sho-saiko-to (小柴胡湯) and is among the most prescribed Kampo formulas.
