“This is an exceptionally detailed treatise on the Beatles’ song book. It demands a serious effort from the reader who must have good recall of the Beatles’ catalogue in addition to knowledge of contemporary recordings from the era, an ability to hear harmony referenced by Roman numerals and a competent level of music literacy.

It is extraordinarily well researched and offers original ideas on the association of words and choice of harmonies, parallel tonality, modulation, chord construction and much, much more. In other words it’s a real work of scholarship.

The fascinating question is how Lennon, McCartney, and to a lesser extent, Harrison, could write so intuitively without realising any of this. Peddler persuades us that many of their songs show a harmonic, melodic and lyrical mastery that compares with Schubert and the greatest lieder composers. A work of real insight for the Beatles scholar”.
