Here we have a beautiful antique Chinese enamelled copper tray dating to the late Qing Dynasty or early Republican period, c1890–1920. Firstly, the photographs don't do this justice; the tray is decorated with a finely hand painted scene depicting two elegantly attired ladies within a traditional scholar's garden. They are surrounded by dramatic rock formations, a pine tree and a tranquil waterside landscape. Such scenes were popular in Chinese decorative arts, symbolising refinement, cultivation and harmony with nature. The artist has employed a wonderfully delicate palette of pale blues, soft greens, pinks and warm orange tones, creating a composition that remains remarkably fresh and attractive over a century later. The painted enamelled panel is set within an exceptional embossed copper border of intertwining scrollwork, foliage and stylised blossoms. Richly worked and highly decorative, the border frames the central image beautifully and adds considerable depth and texture to the piece. The style of painting, construction and decorative treatment are all consistent with Chinese export wares produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Measuring approximately 9 inches by 7 inches, it is an ideal display size. Combining traditional symbolism, skilled hand decoration and an unusually elaborate copper surround, this is a particularly appealing example that would grace any collection of Chinese decorative arts, Asian antiques or period interior furnishings.
