CharlElie Couture is an artist as unpredictable as original, we already knew it. His 19th album (yes!) Confirms us over and over again when, curious about all musical expressions, the extraordinary songwriter chooses to rub shoulders with samples and the programming of an unexpected trip-hop. It is therefore at the forefront of modernity that he creates pieces as successful as "Les Idées contraires", "Encore" or "Cruelle". Without forgetting to return, with "Between dream and reality" or the superb "A hand in mine", to compositions closer to his previous successes. For all, of a beautiful inventiveness, he surrounded himself with virtuoso musicians, such as the excellent guitarist Alice Botté. While,in an almost conceptual approach, he drew all his inspiration from the outline of romantic relationships. Twenty years after his debut, French songster CharlElie updated his sound by looking to the new wave of post-millennium pop; in the liner notes, he name-checks the Eels, Tricky, Orb, and Ben Harper. The result is one of CharlElie's best albums since the early '80s -- a brilliant set of twisted songcraft that balances dark, sampladelic electronic soundscapes with upfront melodies and aggressive, confident vocals. Highlights include "Je L'aime Quand Elle S'aime" and "Les Idées Contraires."
