Claudio Arrau plays Grieg and Shunannr
Claudio Arrau
Claudio Arrau was one of the great pianists of the 20th century, admired for his depth, intellectual seriousness, and immense repertoire. Born in Chile in 1903, he became especially renowned for Beethoven, but he was also celebrated for Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, and Debussy.
Arrau was known for treating music as something to be interpreted with great fidelity and imagination, not merely displayed for virtuosity. Critics and fellow musicians praised the richness of his tone, the seriousness of his approach, and the sense that his playing was built around musical meaning rather than surface brilliance.
He was often described as a pianist of unusual authority, especially in Beethoven. He performed complete cycles of major composers’ works, including Bach’s keyboard works, Mozart’s keyboard works, and Beethoven’s sonatas and concertos, which helped establish him as a scholar-pianist as well as a great performer.
