Here's the blurb from Tama:

The magic tonal combination of Birch and Bubinga is now part of the Tama Sound Lab Project line. With a stunning exterior ply of matte-finished white oak, the Tama SLP Backbeat Birch Snare Drum makes a beautiful centrepiece. The drum's best qualities stem from the Bubinga Birch blend inside. Blending the rich, dark tonality of three interior Bubinga plies with the perfect projection of four Birch out plies, this snare matches remarkable sensitivity with profound depth as greater striking pressure is used. The hardware of this snare features 2.3mm steel mighty hoops, brass tube lugs and a strand of 20 hi-carbon steel snares.

TAMA's S.L.P. Series

TAMA's Backbeat Bubinga Birch 7 x 14" snare drum is part of TAMA's S.L.P. (Sound Lab Project) Series. Your snare drum is the cornerstone of your kit - something you certainly want to get right! But with so many snare drums to choose from, it can be a major headache to find the ideal one to compliment your drumming style. S.L.P. is all about helping you to zero-in on your perfect snare drum. TAMA didn't only use different shell materials for its S.L.P. Series snare drums; they took it a step further and experimented with different snares, hoops, and lugs. The result? Each drum has its own distinct personality. And "personality" is what a great snare sound is all about.

Birch and bubinga - a TAMA signature recipe

TAMA has a potent recipe up their sleeve: birch and bubinga. In the Backbeat Bubinga Birch 7 x 14" snare, three interior bubinga plies supply outstandingly rich, dark low end. The outer four plies are of birch - a wood known for its potent, incisive "crack." Combined in a snare drum with a 7" depth, these tonewood give you a formidable sound that's ideal for music that requires a heavier backbeat.
