The Diamond

The line that decides the value of any pink diamond is Colour Origin: Natural. Most pink material sold at reachable prices is irradiated or HPHT-treated white diamond, and the two are indistinguishable to the eye. GIA has examined this stone and confirmed the colour is its own. Pink is thought to arise from plastic deformation — the crystal lattice physically distorted under pressure as the stone travelled toward the surface — and nothing about that can be arranged after the fact.

Clarity is VS1, which is the second thing worth noting. Inclusions are minor and require magnification; nothing is visible to the naked eye. That grade matters more on a pale stone than on a saturated one, because a light body colour hides very little. GIA's plot for this diamond shows a feather and a natural, with graining noted in the comments.

Polish is Excellent and Symmetry Very Good. On a cushion modified brilliant — a cushion outline cut with brilliant-style faceting rather than the older step arrangement — good finish is what keeps the facets returning light cleanly rather than muddying it.

Certified natural pink, VS1, Excellent polish. The report carries the argument.

What The Report Also Says

Full Disclosure

The stone is cut deep, and this is the main thing to understand before bidding. Total depth is 72.2%, well above what is typical, and the girdle runs slightly thick to very thick. A good deal of the 0.46 carat is held below the girdle where the eye cannot see it. At 4.55 × 4.24 mm this diamond faces up nearer a 0.35 ct stone than a 0.46 ct one. If you are buying for face-up size, buy on the millimetres and not on the carat weight.

The counterpart is that depth helps the colour. A longer light path through the stone deepens the pink the eye receives, and on a Light Pink that is not a trivial gain. It is a real trade-off rather than simply a fault — but you should know which side of it you are buying.

Light Pink is not a Fancy grade. On GIA's coloured diamond scale, Light sits below Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid. This is a delicate pink, not a saturated one, and it is priced as what it is.

The table is 65%, which is large. It contributes to the face-up appearance and to how the light returns. Judge it from the photographs.

GIA's comments record internal and surface graining that is not plotted on the diagram. The clarity plot itself shows a feather and a natural. None of this reaches the naked eye at VS1, but it is on the report and we are not omitting it.

Every photograph and the video show the actual stone under natural light without colour correction. Pale pinks read warmer under incandescent light and cooler under daylight, so please review all images before bidding.

The Facet House is a Bangkok-based supplier of natural diamonds and coloured gemstones. We buy at source and grade in Bangkok, and we deal only in stones we can document.

Where a stone carries a laboratory report we quote it in full, including the lines that are not flattering. Where a stone does not, we say so plainly rather than letting a buyer assume otherwise.
