Seiko Seikomatic Chronometer 6245-9000 “Pre-62GS” – First Automatic GS Precursor – For Service

At a Glance (Condition Summary)

Model Background

The Seikomatic Chronometer 6245-9000 is one of the most important pre-Grand Seiko automatic Seikos and is widely viewed as the direct predecessor to the 62GS, Grand Seiko’s first automatic line. Multiple vintage sources note that the 62GS effectively started life as the Seikomatic Chronometer 6245/6246-9000, first introduced in the mid-1960s before Seiko transitioned the design into the Grand Seiko family.

This reference uses the caliber 6245A, a 35-jewel automatic movement beating at 19,800 bph, housed in the classic early 62GS-style case with a large dial opening and clean, elegant mid-1960s proportions. That direct connection to the first automatic Grand Seikos is exactly why collectors often refer to these as “Pre-62GS” pieces.
