1984 Datsun 300ZX Turbo Anniversary Coupe
For consignment, a 1984 Datsun 300ZX turbo 50th Anniversary coupe showing 27,193 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to exemption. In all the years you've been dreaming of owning a 50th anniversary Z, this one's been slumbering away in long term storage and is now ready for winding road adventure with the T-tops stowed away in back!
Exterior
All anniversary cars wore the same coat of Light Pewter Metallic and Thunder Black, a bold and aggressive scheme that encircles the rocker panel in black delineated with a gold stripe that coordinated with the blades of the special 16-inch wheels wrapped in 50 series ZR rated tires. Long before Liberty editions became a thing, the rear wheel openings were widened by cladding and a streamlined rear wing turned upward to shed the wind. Notably, Turbo is broadcast in gold and large lettering on the rocker cladding and an offset hood scoop is another field mark of the turbo edition. Tinted translucent T-tops fit like puzzle pieces up top and a flush rear window and long, triangle quarter windows define the Z shape. Imperfections include several paint chips on the hood, C-pillar, and door, a scuff ahead of the left front wheel, rock chips and scratches ahead and behind the rear wheels, a busted tab on a fender liner and ding on the opening, multiple areas of chips and peeling of the gold stripe, (our consignor has a new stripe kit), flex cracks on front apron, chin scrapes, and various scuffs.
Interior
Smooth leather surrounds a pleated leather insert, all in black on the doors with the driver's side showing some looseness but both present cleanly. 50 is embroidered in gold on the black leather bucket seats and these too, are in nice condition. The quintessential 80's Japanese steering wheel is provided to the driver leading to a digital dashboard that looks right out of the movie TRON while to the right, silver topped small buttons control the AM/FM/Cassette radio and A/C controls. In true Z fashion, two gauges in the dash are canted to the pilot in grain black material that is clean and intact. The perfectly placed shifter is on your right, based in burlwood along with the bodysonic dials for the seats and other switchgear. Plush black carpet is protected by 50th anniversary mats and the package shelf and cargo area is also plush carpeted and clean.
Drivetrain
The 3.0 liter inline 6 turbocharged engine in the busy bay could use a deeper detailing but it's all there in its red colored glory. It's rated at 200 horsepower and mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that routes power to the rear wheels and 3.54 gears.
Undercarriage
Age patina is prevalent with some typical surface rust and metal oxidation, but otherwise clean and dry underneath, although some seepage is noted at the rear differential. The knuckles are clean and boots intact. Four wheel power disc brakes are on board and the single exhaust flows through original equipment on its way to twin ANSA chrome tips in back. Suspension consists of Macpherson struts in front and coil springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
The Z's characteristic ride is delivered by this survivor, and that means excellent handling with a driver focused cockpit, nice visibility, and good power.We're riding with the t-tops in place, but can imagine the open air experience enhancing an already fine driving car. We note the horn is not working but all other functions on board work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Is this design really more than 40 years old? Datsun/Nissan created a timeless car which is why Z's of every generation are enjoying a resurgence in the collector market.
