Exterior
The star of the show is the SS hood scoop, originally produced by SLP but for '98, Chevy kept it in house, and that intake combines with the gaping black mouth up front and headlights to create an aggressive car best viewed in your rear view mirror. The presence of black sport side mirrors, a black roof, and black C-pillars over the Flame Red body gives it that fighter jet profile and 17-inch wheels carry 40 series ZR rated tires tucked nicely into the wheel wells. A wide integrated wing allows for flowing air to funnel underneath and the wide rear fascia and body colored bumper wave that wind goodbye. Imperfections include a few touched up chips and scratches and some typical chin scrapes.
Interior
If you were expecting the typical black interior, you'll be in for a bit of a surprise as this one is donned in Light Neutral with matching plaid cloth inserts on the doors and bucket seats bordered in tan. The doors and all four seats are in very nice condition and are contrasted by the black dashboard, center console and steering wheel. The instrument cluster behind plexi is fairly standard despite the high performance and the center stack has the integrated AM/FM/Cassette with its big buttons and the A/C knobs. A big ball handle tops the stout shifter and an extra toggle panel with red button is nearby and likely linked to the nitrous system. Low pile tan carpet covers the footwells and cargo area and an NX nitrous bottle is strapped in and ready for action.
Drivetrain
Other than a glossy airbox, strut tower brace and some extra tubing snaking around, the engine bay presents clean and original. Here we have the 5.7 liter LS1 V8 fitted with a high performance cam and the aforementioned nitrous kit. It's mated to a T56 6-speed manual transmission with McCleod clutch that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.42 gears and Positraction.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with minimal surface rust and a lack of errant fluids. Four wheel power disc brakes are on hand and exhaust begins with headers and makes its way to the back where it finds a glasspack style muffler that emits short tips behind the bumper cover. There are no catalytic converters underneath. 2" lowering coil springs are front and rear and a torque arm is also employed on the back.
Drive-Ability
Feeling somewhat pedestrian with that plaid interior, all bets go out the door when you turn the key and put it in gear as the exhaust note has obviously come to play! We'll avoid the secret red button for now, but even without it, the LS1 is a powerful engine that delivers fine acceleration and the lowered stance affords some excellent handling. In the functionality department, all items work as intended and we're satisfied to get this one on the showroom floor to await its next steward. SS Z28's already came with a little bump in the oomph factor, and this one's been massaged a little bit more to get the most out of the muscle.
