I recently purchased a large bag of wheat cents from a dealer labelled 1909-1929. I am breaking this up and selling it off in lots of 100. I have NOT searched through this bag coin by coin. Obviously, the person who organized the bag did, on some level. They would have had to have done this to know that they weren't putting in later dates.
However, I did spot check the bag as I was purchasing in it, just to make sure that I knew what I was purchasing. Also, after purchasing it, I randomly checked out 100 the coins from this giant bag. Here is what I found:
1) 50 of the 100 were dated 1910-1919 (no 1909 in the lot of 100 that I checked--although there could be in other lots of 100).
2) 47 of the 100 dated 1920-1929.
3) 2 were dated later than 1920 (Oops!)
4) 1 that I couldn't read clearly
5) 7 of the coins had mintmarks, the earliest being 1916-D.
6) I am adding a couple of extra pennies to each lot.
I am not saying that my sample of 100 is exactly reflective of each lot. But it should, hopefully, give some sort of general guideline of what to expect.
I try to be careful not to overhype my sales or to over-promise. Again, I have not gone through this lot coin by coin. For me to be more specific would require me to go through each lot coin by coin--which I have NO interest in doing! FWIW, the 2nd photo is of a random 50 coins from the bag that I purchased.
